How to build a DIY potting bench {with my Dad!} from Thrifty Decor Chick

Well hi there! Many thanks so significantly for your exhilaration above our patio venture. ) Now they concluded putting in and mortaring the fire. Tomorrow they begin applying the stone. SO. Enthusiastic.

Mainly because we are on an outside roll these days, I obtained some mojo up in listed here and tackled a task I’ve desired to do for yrs.

I’ve often required a potting bench…you know, for all the crops I cannot keep alive. ) I desired it for planting, but also for entertaining. A individual place to place ice, beverages, meals, whichever…sounded amazing.

(This is an up-to-date post from decades in the past that I am sharing once more!)

So the potting bench was the perfect remedy. And my Dad explained he’d aid me create one particular. He came more than and I confirmed him my inspiration image:

That would be the Abbott Island from Pottery Barn (of study course) and it is quite wonderful, certainly? The cost is rather magnificent way too – as in I’m very awesomely heading to pass out, $1300.
Dad’s reaction? “We can completely do that.”

Alright, I added the totally…he didn’t say that aspect. But he understood we could do it!

We talked about what variety of wooden I needed to use. Originally I wished cedar (mainly because it would maintain up most effective outdoors) but it is additional costly. Then Dad requested if I’m fantastic about putting outdoor things away or covering it for the wintertime and my response it was a quick and definite NO.
So we went with cedar. 🙂

Which is my Dad way up there!

We obtained our materials – two 4 x 4’s, a number of 1 x 4’s and a bunch of 1 x 6’s. (If you have no strategy what I’m chatting about, I’ll exhibit you people in a movie down below.)

We slice the 4 x 4’s to 36 inches, then stood them up to start out our style and design:

We minimize the 1 x 4’s to the duration we necessary (additional on that in a bit), then connected them with screws to the best of every single 4 x 4 and about a foot from the bottom of each and every as effectively (for the base shelf I required):

You can see in this article how the 1 x 4’s (the extended horizontal boards) go off the edge of the legs a bit:

That’s because we made a “frame” about the entire matter, on best and base:

No mitered (angled) cuts – just basic, straight kinds. The ideal variety. )

For included assist, we put a few more boards on the inside of every leg as very well:

See how simple this is? It is just boards screwed into boards. If you have resources, YOU can do this!

We additional a few more boards to the middle, again with screws – just for a little bit a lot more guidance:

Far more support in no way hurts.

Then we lower 1 x 6’s to the depth of the desk (about 25 inches) and laid them across the base. Nonetheless once more, we just screwed them in. No glue, no nails. Just screws.
Straightforward peasy. I swear.

We minimize much more 1 x 6’s to healthy the major, this way going with the length of the desk. Our cuts ended up a bit off and we were being obtaining a little weary and a lot scorching, so we just put in them, then Father slash down the edge with the jigsaw:

It labored like allure!

And then…we had been finished. Start to end, it took us two several hours. TWO Hours. I can’t imagine how quick it went! We ended up the two in a groove, since this total matter went like buttah. Not 1 issue — we couldn’t believe it.

I observed some standard, low profile hooks and connected those people to the sides:

I have no notion what I’ll cling on them but they seem FAB!

I really like it so much!!:

I did a speedy video clip to exhibit you the details up close, just in circumstance this isn’t very clear. It definitely is a basic as it appears while – it came alongside one another conveniently.

Here’s the video clip and I can’t consider I set my confront on right here, critically. I experienced been perspiring profusely for two several hours straight. And I say “um,” “basic,” and “just” an awful good deal. But this should help you see far more of how it was built:

You can see on the video that the bench is put more than our fire vent ideal now but the fire is not on and the pilot light-weight is not lit. It will be moved in excess of. Do not place something near your vent!

So here’s the PB version:

And ours:

The PB edition is 50 inches vast, 28 deep and 36 substantial. Mine is 60 inches extensive, 28 deep and 37 superior. I did not even prepare on the dimensions matching up so a lot, it just worked out that way. 🙂

The cedar wooden expense about $130 – not a tremendous low-cost undertaking, but contemplating it is $1000 much less expensive than my inspiration, I’m thrilled. And mine is even broader than theirs! By the way — this could very easily do the job as an island in a kitchen!

I’m striving to choose if I’m heading to increase some wheels – I observed these super awesome casters:

I just don’t know if they are chunky sufficient. I may well place them on just to see – it will not damage!

Now…the Significant problem! What to do now? I had prepared all together to stain or paint it. When I talked about paint to my Father I assume he might have had a compact conniption. ) He explained the cedar will age superbly more than time and he would just leave it.

And when I hosed every thing off, it was even extra stunning – the water brought out all the magnificence in the wooden:

So now I’m leaning toward just a coat of poly or Tung oil, to deliver out the tones of the wood.
What would you do? Paint it? Stain it? Leave it as is? I know what my Father would do. ) When I determine that out, I’m heading to start out applying it and I can’t wait!

Speaking of my Father – HE IS Wonderful!! It thrills me to no close that we can Do-it-yourself jointly like this. I love that we carry on to make father/daughter recollections, even as I get more mature. And he reads this site, each and every working day.  🙂 Thanks Dad, I enjoy you!
